This hallmarked silver vesta case was made in Birmingham, England circa 1903. On the front it is engraved with a filigree design and some initials. It has some wear and tarnishing as you would expect but is a lovely piece overall. It is attached to a chain with an old button.
It carries the makers mark J.G

Size: 45mm long x 30mm wide x 12mm thick & 18grams (approximately)
Vesta cases, or simply “vestas” are small boxes made to house wax or “strike anywhere” matches. The first successful friction match appeared in 1826, and in 1832 William Newton patented the “wax vesta” in England. It consisted of a wax stem with embedded cotton threads and a tip of phosphorus. Newton named his matches after Vesta, the Roman goddess of fire and the hearth.
