Pawnbroking FAQs
1. What is a Pawnbroker?
Pawnbroking is an ancient profession dating back thousands of years with pawnbrokers recorded as having existed as early as 3000 years ago! A pawnbroker is a financial institution that offers loans to individuals in exchange for personal property as collateral. We are also able to purchase items which is perfect for anyone wanting a quick, hassle free sale.
2. What does it mean to Pawn an item?
Pawning an item refers to the process of taking a valuable item to a pawnbroker and using it as collateral to secure a loan. When an individual pawns an item, they are essentially borrowing money from the pawnbroker and agreeing to pay it back within a certain time frame, usually within a few months. Pawning an item can be a quick and convenient way to get a loan, especially for people who may not have access to traditional forms of credit. When you repay the loan you are able to collect your items.
3. Can anyone Pawn an item?
To pawn an item you must be at least 18 years old and have two valid forms of I.D, such as Driver’s Licence and Medicare Card or Healthcare Card. We require physical copies of your I.D (not photos) or to see your official government issued digital I.D.
4. What are the advantages of using Pawnbrokers?
Pawnbrokers are a quick and easy way to secure a loan with the whole process taking only 15 minutes. We don’t check your income or credit rating when as the value of the item is the only thing that is considered when deciding how much you can borrow. Pawning an item doesn’t affect your credit rating. If you are unable to repay your loan, the item is sold to recoup the amount lent.
5. What other lingo do I need to know?
After receiving a loan we will provide you with a printed copy of the loan contract, which is referred to as a ticket. You present the ticket when you making a payment or collecting your items. There are a few other slang terms associated with Pawnbroking. Often people will refer to the items they are loaning as pledges. Another common one is to call a pawn shop a hock shop, and instead of pawning an item they will say hock it.
