Description

Fukurokuju, also called Fukurokujin, (from Japanese fuku, “happiness”; roku, “wealth”; and ju, “longevity”), is one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (Seven Gods of Luck). He represents longevity and wisdom. He is said to have once lived on earth as a Chinese Taoist sage. He is occasionally accompanied by a crane or by another animal associated with longevity.

A netsuke is a miniature sculpture, originating in 17th century Japan. Initially a simply-carved button fastener on the cords of an inro box, netsuke later developed into ornately sculpted objects of craftsmanship.

This netsuke is in lovely condition and features a Fukurokuju holding a staff and a crane (bird) on a stool next to him, one of the legs of the stool appears to be missing or broken. It bears the makers signature on the bottom.
