This stein was made by Schierholz in the mid to late 1800s. It is beautifully made and is a very special and rare piece. As an antique it has wear and some cracks to the lid that have been repaired. It looks like the figure on the top has also been reglued at some point. Please see the photos for further details on the condition as it is far from perfect.
It features a beautifully detailed lithophane at the bottom showing deer (doe & stagg) in a nature scene.
Schierholz is one of the most respected makers of porcelain character steins during the golden age of stein-making, and surely the most prolific. It was a company which operated in the small town of Plaue. The name of the company changed several times over the years, but is commonly referred to among collectors as Schierholz & Sohn, its name at the end of the 19th century. At least 115 different character stein designs have been attributed to Schierholz.
