Description

This painting of a man feeding a dog by Alfred James Daplyn was created with watercolour on paper. It has been framed under glass. The frame does have a chip in the bottom right hand corner as shown in the photo.

Alfred James Daplyn was an English-born Australian artist. Daplyn studied in London at the Slade School of Fine Art, the National Academy in New York City and under Jean-Léon Gérôme at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in Rome.

Daplyn migrated to Melbourne in 1881 and then later to Sydney where he became secretary of the New South Wales Art Society. As the Society’s instructor in painting between 1885-92, Daplyn influenced Charles Conder, Sydney Long and Julian Ashton.
